TUMMY TUCK/ABDOMINOPLASTY

Tummy Tuck Description

Everyone dreams of a flat stomach, but when muscles become weakened and skin becomes lax, it can result in loose and excess flab around the abdomen.  This condition is very common after pregnancy or following a significant weight loss.  Unfortunately, even the most conscientious diet and exercise program is often not enough to resolve these issues because excess skin and stretched muscles cannot be retightened through exercise alone.  An abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure that can remove excess skin and fat, while repairing weakened or separated abdominal muscles.  An abdominoplasty can result in a tighter, firmer and slimmer abdomen.   The decision to have abdominoplasty is a personal one that should be considered carefully.  While abdominoplasty can give you a slimmer, tighter abdominal profile, you are essentially trading loose skin and stretch marks for an incision in the bikini line.   Your doctor will discuss the best ways to minimize scarring and answer any questions you may have about this procedure.

Tummy Tuck Procedure

During this procedure, an incision is made across the lower abdomen, near the bikini line. Excess skin and fat is removed between the naval and bikini line, and the muscles are repaired and restored to their normal position in the midline.  Usually, there will be a second incision around the naval so that the naval can be repositioned after the skin is tightened.  While scarring will be visible, it is usually well concealed by most bathing suits and underwear.  Abdominoplasty is usually performed in an outpatient surgical facility, with most patients able to return home the same day.  While you’ll be able to walk and even manage some stairs as early as that same day, strenuous activities will be limited during the healing process, typically between 4 and 6 weeks.  Most patients can resume work within 1 to 2 weeks after surgery, depending on your overall health and job requirements.  You can expect mild to moderate swelling for the first several weeks after surgery. Your surgeon will discuss specific post-operative instructions with you, including wound care, compression garments, and pain management. A post-operative appointment is usually scheduled for one week after surgery.
